Rory Gilmore is the only daughter of Lorelai Gilmore and Christopher Hayden. Her mother had her when she was just sixteen, so for a lot of their lives, Lorelai and Rory had nothing to do with Lorelai’s parents, Emily and Richard. Rory was born in, and grew up, in the small Connecticut town of Stars Hollow, the close knit community taking her to their hearts. Her relationship with her mother is often more closely characterised as that of sisters, or best friends.

After being accepted to Chilton, a prestigious Hartford school, Rory’s dream of going to Harvard and becoming Christiane Amanpour is one step closer. It also results in a deal with Emily and Richard that requires Rory and her mother attend Friday Night Dinners in return for Rory’s tuition money. Once she graduates Chilton, Rory follows in her Grandfather’s footsteps and attends Yale University instead of Harvard. During her time there she becomes the Yale Daily News Editor, a feather in her cap and a big step towards her dream career as a reporter.

After she graduates, Rory gets her first job as a reporter for an online magazine and her assignment is to follow Barak Obama on his campaign for the White House.

Rory’s love life has never been free of complications. Her first steady boyfriend, Dean Forrester, moved from Chicago to Stars Hollow. They fell in love while Rory was just sixteen, but during her time with Dean, she met Jess Mariano—Luke Dane’s nephew. Jess was seen as a bad boy by the town, but that didn’t stop Rory from being drawn to him. Jess and Rory dated after she broke up with Dean, but Jess wound up leaving Stars Hollow to find out about his father. It broke Rory’s heart, but Jess has always returned to Rory over the years, trying to show her the love she deserves. While Rory is at college, she stays in contact with Dean who became a married man. They wind up caught in an affair, and her first time is with him. Rory is the other woman, and eventually Dean leaves his wife to try and be with Rory. Once again the two can’t quite make it work and they break up. Rory’s third love is Logan Huntzberger, a media mogul’s son and someone who leads a very different life to the one Rory is used to. Despite it all, they nearly become engaged but at Rory’s graduation she tells him she can’t marry him because she feels like she has more to do with her life than become tied down so early.

Rory Gilmore is often seen as shy and quiet. She’s always been more interested in reading and excelling in academics than leading the “average” teen life. She’s inherited a lot of her other qualities from her mother, including the unhealthy diet and constant consumption of junk food, taste in music, taste in clothes, and taste in popular culture.

She’s very caring towards friends and family, and will usually stop at nothing to make them happy. Rory can be quite funny and quirky, her mother’s ability to talk incessantly not lost on her once you get to know her. She’s got a fiery temper when someone really crosses her, but most times she’ll try and resolve things sensibly.
